The 3 best washing machines to buy (2025)
In this article, you can read about the best washing machines available in the UK.
I have compared all washing machines available on PriceSpy, and identified three models in various price categories, which I believe offer the best value for money among more than 150 models.
As I evaluate nearly all washing machines on the market, it’s not feasible to write about every single one. Therefore, I’ve limited the detailed reviews to the models that emerge as test winners.
When comparing washing machines, I consider a wide selection of features such as capacity, as well as how gently the machine treats fabrics. Furthermore I review the flexibility of washing programs, usability, noise levels, build quality, and price.
Go to the best washing machines?
Beko B5W51041AW
Key features:
✔️ Capacity: 10 kg (65 liters)
✔️ Multiple quick programs
✔️ Steam + Wool program
✔️ Gentle drum
Things to consider:
🔻 Residual moisture class B (53%)
🔻 No pre-mixing function
🔻 Durability: 10 years
🔻 Price at the time of review: £499
Beko B5W51041AW is the best washing machine to buy among the more affordable models in this price range in the UK. It offers a large capacity, multiple quick programs, a dedicated steam program, a gentle drum, simple operation, and much more.
Think about this: Beko is manufactured by Grundig in Turkey and is designed to last up to—or potentially over—10 years. As a budget-friendly model, it has a residual moisture level of 53% (B) instead of 44% (A). Additionally, it lacks pre-mixing of detergent and an automatic dosing function.
Capacity
The test-winning Beko model features an above-average drum size of 65 liters, capable of handling up to 10 kilograms of laundry.
A larger drum provides greater flexibility, allowing you to wash larger loads or smaller ones more efficiently. If you have the space in your bathroom, opting for a slightly larger drum is always a better choice.
Remember, a 220 x 90 cm duvet that needs to be washed at least twice a year, requires a minimum drum size of 60 liters.
I recommend not focusing solely on the weight capacity (kilograms), as it doesn't directly correlate to the actual amount of laundry the machine can hold. Instead, pay attention to the drum volume. If your budget allows, go for a washing machine with a drum capacity of at least 60 liters.
Spin cycle
The washing machine can spin at speeds of up to 1400 rpm, depending on the program, resulting in residual moisture of 53%. Choosing a lower spin speed reduces wear and tear on both your clothes and the machine—by about 30% compared to 1600 rpm.
Washing programs
The washing programs are one of the most critical aspects I evaluate to find the best washing machines to buy. This Beko model now includes a standalone steam program, rather than just adding steam as an option after a cotton wash.
The machine features a program called Daily Xpress, allowing you to wash:
30°C in 28 minutes,
40°C in 60 minutes,
90°C in 90 minutes — all with up to 9 kilograms of laundry.
You can also opt for Xpress Super Short at 30°C for small loads (up to 2 kilograms) in just 14 minutes.
It's uncommon for washing machines to handle quick programs at full load capacity, as this Beko model does. For example, the quick program on LG's test-winning model (TurboWash) can only handle 5 out of 9 kilograms in its 59-minute cycle.
Other practical programs include a dedicated wool program and a downloadable program for Gore-Tex clothing.
The machine also comes with a drum cleaning program, which should be used periodically with a cleaning agent to keep the washing machine clean and free from bacteria.
Features
This washing machine features a remarkably gentle drum compared to competitors in the same price range. It minimizes friction and wear on fabrics, helping your clothes last longer. This is due to the unique interior drum design, which lifts and presses the clothes during the spin cycle.
Unfortunately, this Beko model does not include automatic detergent dosing like its predecessor.
Every time you wash synthetic fabrics, tiny microfibers are released, eventually ending up in the ocean and polluting marine life. The FiberCatcher function includes a built-in microfiber filter that captures up to 90% of microfibers, preventing them from being flushed into waterways.
Noise level
The washing machine is equipped with a brushless motor, like most modern models, which is designed to last up to—or potentially over—10 years, provided the drum is not overloaded, as many people tend to do.
A brushless motor also ensures quieter operation. This model is relatively quiet, with only 75 dB during spinning (52 dB during washing). Anti-vibration pads at the base can further reduce noise levels.
Safety
The machine includes an aqua-stop system that detects changes in water pressure in the hose caused by leaks and automatically shuts off the water supply. It also features child lock, unbalanced load protection, automatic water adjustment, and an emergency drainage hose.
If installing the washing machine in a kitchen, make sure to place a drip tray underneath.
I strongly recommend purchasing a stacking frame to keep the tumble dryer stable. Having used both with and without a stacking frame, I can confirm that using one is significantly better.
However, note that some tumble dryers have a bottom lid that may be difficult to open with basic stacking frames.
LG F4Y711WBTA1
Key features:
✔️ Capacity: 11 kg (68 liters)
✔️ TurboWash 39' with 5 kg
✔️ Steam function and Wool program
✔️ 44% residual moisture (A)
✔️ Automatic detergent dosing
Things to consider:
🔻 No pre-mixing function
🔻 Steam function only
🔻 Durability: 10–15 years
🔻 Price at the time of review: £699
LG F4Y711WBTA1 is the best washing machine to buy among higher-end models in this price range in the UK. It features a large and gentle 68-liter drum with an 11 kg capacity, paired with the market’s most efficient spin cycle, achieving a residual moisture level of 44% even at 1400 rpm. This is unique and gentler on clothes.
The test-winning model includes the quick programs "TurboWash" (39 minutes) and "Speed" (14 minutes), as well as automatic detergent dosing for all fabric types. It also features a steam function that can be added to several programs for improved cleaning performance.
Things to consider: While this new model includes automatic detergent dosing, it still lacks a pre-mixing function. Additionally, unlike its predecessor, which had a dedicated steam program, this model only offers a steam function as an optional addition to selected programs.
Capacity
This washing machine features a 68-liter drum with an 11 kg capacity, making it suitable for both average households and larger families accustomed to daily washing.
Its size is sufficient for washing a standard duvet, which requires a minimum drum volume of 60 liters.
I believe it’s more important to focus on the drum volume, as this directly determines how much you can fit. Kilograms are not synonymous with size.
Spin cycle
The test-winning LG model is truly unique when it comes to spinning performance, treating your laundry better than most other machines. It spins at 1400 rpm (depending on the program) but delivers the same efficiency as machines with 1600 rpm.
This results in a residual moisture level of just 44% (Class A), compared to 53% in many other machines. This means the machine is just as effective as the best models but gentler on your clothes. LG refers to this technology as AI DD.
Washing programs
The washing machine includes two quick programs. The fastest program (Speed) takes only 14 minutes (for up to 2 kg), making it ideal for small loads.
However, the program you’re likely to use most often is TurboWash, which completes a 5 kg load in just 39 minutes — 20 minutes faster than its predecessor!
As mentioned earlier, this new model doesn’t include a standalone steam-only program for washing items like shirts, blouses, tablecloths, and baby clothes. Instead, it offers a steam function that can be added to seven of its programs: Cotton, Eco, TurboWash, Mixed, Synthetic, Allergy, and AI Wash.
Features
The drum is designed as a gentle-care drum, ensuring minimal wear on your clothes compared to many traditional and very inexpensive washing machines.
You can remotely control the washing machine using your smartphone, should you find it useful. What I find practical about the Wi-Fi feature (LG SmartThinQ) is the ability to download additional wash programs and diagnose potential issues with Smart Diagnosis.
Noise level
The washing machine features a brushless motor, like most modern machines, which means it is designed to operate efficiently for up to — and possibly beyond — 10 years, provided you don’t overload the drum.
The noise level during spinning is 72 dB, making this LG model exceptionally quiet. Adding rubber pads underneath the machine can further reduce noise.
Safety
Unfortunately, this machine does not include an aqua-stop system to detect changes in water pressure caused by leaks and automatically shut off the water supply.
I personally own an LG washing machine without this feature but have added a hose equipped with aqua-stop for extra safety.
Miele WWG 360 WiFi
Key features:
✔️ Capacity: 9 kg (64 liters)
✔️ PowerWash 49' with 4 kg
✔️ QuickWash 20' with 3.5 kg
✔️ Extremely gentle on fabrics
Things to consider:
🔻 53% residual moisture (B)
🔻 Durability: Up to 20 years
🔻 Price at the time of review: £1299
Miele WWG360 is the best washing machine to buy among absolute best higher-end models in this price range in the UK.
It’s the perfect machine for those who value premium quality in every aspect. The machine is extremely gentle on all types of fabrics, offers flexible quick programs, is easy to operate, and has a spacious drum.
Things to consider: This model is more expensive, so you’ll need to decide whether you’re willing to invest in what I consider the best washing machine on the market in terms of value. However, it lacks some features found in less expensive competitors, such as automatic detergent dosing or a dedicated steam program.
Capacity
This washing machine has a 64-liter drum and an 8 kg capacity, making it suitable for most households, provided there’s enough space in your bathroom for a slightly deeper machine.
It’s essential not to focus solely on the weight capacity, as it only indicates how much laundry (in kilograms) the machine can handle but doesn’t reflect what can physically fit inside. For example, a 90 x 220 cm duvet requires a drum of at least 60 liters to be cleaned effectively.
Spin cycle
The machine offers a spin speed of up to 1400 rpm, with a residual moisture level of 53%. This is in line with manufacturers' recommendations, as it is gentler on both clothes and the machine over time, reducing wear and tear compared to 1600 rpm.
At this price point, I would have preferred a more efficient spin cycle like LG's test-winning model, which achieves 44% residual moisture at 1400 rpm. This means the LG extracts more water without causing additional wear to the clothes.
Washing programs
The washing machine includes a QuickPowerWash program, allowing you to wash 4 kg of laundry (40–60°C) in just 49 minutes.
The Express 20 program lets you wash 3.5 kg in just 20 minutes at a cool 26°C.
For garments requiring special care, Miele offers an easy and efficient solution. Small detergent capsules are placed in a dedicated chamber in the detergent drawer. The machine dispenses the detergent at the correct stage of the program.
You can choose from six specialized detergents (Sport, Down, Outdoor, Wool, Silk, and Impregnation), three fabric softeners (Aqua, Nature, Cocoon), and a booster for tough stains.
Features
Some Miele washing machines, including this one, can adjust the wash settings for loads as small as 1 kg, thanks to the SingleWash feature. This allows you to wash a single garment when needed—something many other machines struggle with due to minimum weight requirements for spinning.
The AddLoad function lets you add forgotten items, such as a t-shirt or sock, after the program has started.
Miele is known for having some of the most gentle drums on the market, ensuring minimal wear on fabrics, provided the correct program is selected.
Another standout feature of Miele machines is their low noise levels during both washing and spinning. This model stays below 68 decibels during spinning. Adding vibration dampeners can further reduce noise.
Noise level
The test-winning model features a brushless motor, ensuring greater durability and quieter operation. With a noise level of just 68 dB during spinning, it is remarkably quiet during use.
Safety
The Water Control System (WCS) monitors water intake using a sensor, acting like an aqua-stop. If the correct water level isn’t reached, the intake is stopped.
In the event of a water leak inside the machine, the inlet valve closes, and any remaining water is pumped out. A built-in sensor also detects leaks.
How to choose the best washing machine?
If none of the models in this washing machine test meet your needs, it’s important to know what to look for—and why—before buying a new washing machine.
Type of washing machine
Front-Loading
A front-loading washing machine is the most popular type in Europe, as most houses and apartments are designed to accommodate this style. The main advantage of a front-loading machine is its larger drum capacity.Top-Loading
A top-loading washing machine is ideal for smaller apartments or compact bathrooms and laundry rooms. Compared to front-loading machines, the drum capacity is significantly smaller. Top-loading machines are best suited for single-person households.Washer-Dryer Combo
A washer-dryer combo is suitable if you only need to dry clothes occasionally. If you plan to dry clothes as often as you wash them, it’s better to purchase a separate dryer. Dryers have drums twice the size of washing machines, making the drum in combo machines too small. Additionally, combo machines typically lack a lint filter.Integrated
An integrated washing machine is perfect if you don’t have space for one in your bathroom and need it built into your kitchen. Integrated models are also available as washer-dryer combos, but the drum size is too small for effective drying. Instead, it’s better to hang your clothes to dry.
Capacity
One of the first and most important factors I assess when comparing the best washing machines, is their capacity. The capacity of a washing machine is defined by how much dry laundry it can hold (measured in kilograms) and the drum size (measured in liters).
While manufacturers often market machines based on their kilogram capacity, the drum volume is more critical because a high kilogram rating is meaningless if the drum cannot physically accommodate larger items.
I recommend purchasing a washing machine with a drum size of at least 60 liters if your budget allows. A larger drum provides more flexibility and cleaner laundry, as overloading can compromise washing performance.
If you're considering a washer-dryer combo, opt for a machine with a larger drum if you have the space. Clothes will dry faster and more efficiently. Machines with heat pump technology are also a worthwhile investment.
Spin cycle
Although spin speed is no longer as crucial as it once was, it remains a factor in this washing machine review.
Spin speed refers to how many times the drum rotates per minute. A higher spin speed removes more moisture from clothes during a cycle but also increases wear and tear on both the laundry and the machine.
I recommend washing clothes at a maximum of 1400 rpm, as this reduces wear by approximately 30% compared to 1600 rpm, prolonging the lifespan of both your clothes and the machine. Always check the care labels on your garments for guidance.
Washing programs
Another critical factor when choosing a washing machine is the variety and flexibility of its wash programs.
The best washing machines on the market offer a wide selection of programs tailored to different fabrics, such as cotton, mixed loads, baby clothes, silk, delicate garments, hand wash, sportswear, and wool.
Quick programs are particularly useful, but it’s essential to verify their actual capacity by checking the user manual. For instance, the Siemens WM14UTE9DN has a 9 kg capacity, but its Super 30’ program can only handle 4 kg of dry laundry (40°C) in 30 minutes. Most quick programs under 20 minutes are typically limited to 1.5 kg to ensure proper cleaning results.
Features
Laundry experiences significant wear during washing due to friction against the drum, especially during spinning.
A gentle-care drum, such as Samsung’s Diamond Drum, can help clothes last up to 34% longer.
I recommend choosing a washing machine that pre-mixes detergent with water in a dedicated chamber before evenly distributing it in the drum. This ensures better detergent coverage and cleaner clothes.
Many machines now come with automatic detergent dosing, a feature Miele has led with its TwinDos system for years. However, not all machines have separate compartments for detergent for whites and colors.
If the machine you’re considering does not have a brushless motor, I would advise against purchasing it. Non-brushless motors typically last only 5 to 7 years before requiring repairs. Brushless motors are quieter, more energy-efficient, and longer-lasting.
For washer-dryer combos, heat pump technology is a must-have. Additionally, look for a good drying sensor to ensure clothes are thoroughly dried.
Noise level
The noise level of a washing machine is generally around 50 decibels during a regular wash cycle and 75 decibels during spinning.
The quietest washing machines are produced by brands like Miele, Bosch, Siemens, LG, and Samsung. Machines with brushless motors are also quieter.
You can further reduce noise by installing vibration dampeners. Keep in mind that top-loading washing machines tend to be noisier than front-loading models.
Ease of use
A washing machine’s controls should be intuitive, descriptive, and user-friendly, allowing anyone to operate it without needing to study the manual.
Unfortunately, many machines still have unnecessarily complicated interfaces, leaving room for improvement in this area.
Quality
Washing machines, unfortunately, don’t last as long as they used to. Appliances with more digital and practical features are often more prone to requiring repairs, as there are more components that can fail.
That said, the best machines in terms of fabric care, capacity, and features are almost always digital and advanced.
I recommend investing in a washing machine from a high-quality manufacturer, designed to last over 10 years despite its additional features or digital components.
Top brands: Miele and Asko are the best, followed by Bosch and Siemens (same manufacturer), AEG and Electrolux (same manufacturer), LG, Samsung, and others. My previous dryer was from Samsung, and my current one is from LG, and I’ve been very satisfied with both.
-
Sort your laundry by colour and fabric type.
Load the machine according to its capacity guidelines.
Use the appropriate detergent and fabric conditioner.
Select the right washing cycle and temperature.
Regularly clean the machine, including the drum and detergent drawer, to maintain hygiene and efficiency.
-
Many users are unaware of the hidden filter in their washing machine, that should be cleaned monthly to prevent clogs and maintain performance:
Locate the filter compartment, usually at the bottom front of the machine.
Place a towel to catch any water that may spill.
Open the compartment and remove the filter.
Clean the filter under running water, using a brush if necessary.
Reinsert the filter and secure the compartment cover.
-
Common reasons for a washing machine failing to spin include:
Unbalanced load: Ensure the laundry is evenly distributed.
Blocked drain pump: Check and clean the pump filter.
Faulty motor or belt: These may require professional inspection and repair.
-
To avoid unpleasant odours:
Regularly clean the drum by running a maintenance wash with an empty load and a suitable cleaner.
Leave the door open after each wash to allow the interior to dry.
Use the correct amount of detergent to prevent residue build-up.
Clean the detergent drawer and door seal periodically to remove mould and mildew.
-
If you notice a leak:
Check the hoses for any signs of damage or loose connections.
Inspect the door seal for cracks or debris that might prevent a proper seal.
Ensure the detergent drawer is not clogged, causing overflow.
If the issue persists, consult a professional technician.
-
To minimize operational noise:
Ensure the machine is level and stable on the floor.
Avoid overloading the drum.
Check for foreign objects like coins or buttons that might be causing noise.
Consider using anti-vibration pads under the machine's feet.
-
To reduce expenses:
Wash full loads instead of multiple smaller ones.
Use lower temperature settings; washing at 30°C can be effective and energy-efficient.
Choose energy-efficient detergents that work well at lower temperatures.
Regularly maintain your machine to ensure optimal performance.
